About Canna Milk
Canna Milk is pretty much self-descriptive, generally, this is just milk infused with cannabis. Seems simple right? – right! But, as simple as it is, it is also very potent if prepared correctly and can be used to give many of your already favoured recipes a good bang 🙂
If refrigerated properly, milk infused with cannabis tends to last as long as it would in its plain form, so it is advisable to check out the use-by-date before you cook up your next batch.
As for the taste, each to their own, but, personally I like it, and I believe that the flavour profile is heavily influenced by the amount of care taken during the cooking phase. Notably, the flavour fo your canna milk may also be influenced by the cannabis strain that you decide to use.
The potency level of this recipe is highly dependent on two primary factors: The first factor being your ability to understand and execute the steps in this recipe, with the other being the quality of your cannabis. With that mentioned, the number of servings this recipe technically makes is up to you. Using better quality cannabis will result in more ‘servings’ being produced.
I feel compelled to remind you: Take caution when first consuming this beverage! Cannabis edibles tend to have a different effect, often kicking in quite a bit later than you would expect it to, but when they do, its fairly powerful and lasts a while – Significantly longer than it would by smoking. So be advised, it is best to test your tolerance with smaller portions. Okay, so, with that out the way, let’s get down to making some canna milk!
Ingredient List
- 10 Grams Of Cannabis (Chopped Or Finely Ground)
- 2 Litres Of Full Fat Milk
Method
Step 1: Grinding The Bud
Chop or grind your cannabis up depending on your preference – I personally find that grinding the cannabis up into a fine powder works best. I enjoy the process of using my manual hand grinder, but if you look around I am sure you can pick up an electric grinder at your local tobacco store.
Step 2: Boil The Milk
In a thick-bottomed saucepot, add the milk and crank up the heat slowly until it’s hot enough to begin boiling – Reduce the heat to medium immediately once the milk reaches its boiling point. You want to hold the temperature at a point where the milk is ‘simmering’, not boiling.
Remember to keep a close eye on the pot, milk does ‘boil over’ rapidly once it reaches temperatures exceeding just-over 100 degrees celsius. The exact temperature is difficult to pin down, given it differs with each batch of milk and is determined by the unique molecular composition of said batches. But this is not an educational article about milk, so I will move on…
Step 3: Simmer, Decarb And Extract
With the milk steadily simmering, add the ground cannabis slowly and stir thoroughly until all that delicious bud is in the mix, continue to stir for the next 2 minutes after the last of the cannabis is added.
Keep the milk simmering for the next 90 minutes, stirring periodically, diligently ensuring that no milk is able to get stuck to the bottom of the saucepot and that it does not reach its boiling point.
Two very important things are happening during this step:
- Decarboxylation: The consistently raised temperature of the milk will effectively decarb the cannabis.
- Extraction: THC and CBD are both fat-soluble, which means both compounds will be extracted from the cannabis buds (and/or leaves) into the lipids (fat) within the milk.
Step 4: Cool It Down
Once you have simmered the cannabis and milk for long enough, remove from the heat completely, allowing the infusion to slowly cool down to room temperature.
Step 5: Strain And Store
With the infusion now at a more manageable temperature, it’s time to separate the plant matter from the infused milk. So get out your strainer or cheesecloth and carefully pour the milk through into a storage container, preferably a glass bottle – I like to repurpose tomato sauce (ketchup, for the foreigners) bottles for this 🙂
Be sure to press down on the cannabis with the back of a spoon (or something) whilst straining, as to ensure that you manage to squeeze out all the goodness into the milk. Once this is done, you can stick your fresh batch of canna milk into the fridge for further cooling and storage.
Usage
Cannabis-infused milk can be used in many different recipes, in fact, any recipe that calls for the addition of milk would qualify 🙂 Not to mention, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, etc.
Remember: the potency (and thus, the total number of servings) is heavily dependant on the quality of your ingredients, namely the cannabis you use.
