5 Cannabis Strains Worth Knowing About

Over the past few years, we have witnessed a large number of strains wiggle their way into the cannabis marketplace. This influx of new/hybrid cannabis strains came paired with some interesting side-effects to the cannna-market, most notably, some of the more famous (and stable) strains such as Durban Poison, White Widow, etc. began to lose traction in popularity among growers, overall affecting sales and distribution.

Instead, growers seem to presently be leaning more toward the goal of giving their consumers access to ‘newer’ strains, with some arguing that the whole ‘crazy names for different strains’ idea is just a marketing stunt. There may be some truth to this claim, however, it should be stated here that there are some breeders out there with an incredible talent for what they do, creating new hybrid strains that boast higher quantities of either THC and/or CBD, as-well-as the specific genetics needed to increase yields under less than adequate growing conditions.

With that mentioned, here are my 5 favourite hybrid strains that I feel are worth knowing about:

Do-Si-Dos

Okay, so we have a relatively ‘odd’ name here, right out the gate, which I found to be quite interesting – Apparently ‘do-si-do’ is the name of a square-dance figure, ‘do-si-dos’ is the plural of the aforementioned… anyhow.. back to what is relevant.. 🙂

This is an indica-dominant hybrid with many qualities similar to its parent, OG Kush Breath, which is a possible descendant of Girl Scout Cookies. Most crops tend to form sparkling trichomes, vibrant pistils, and alight/lime green (sometimes lavender) leaves. Honestly, you have to see this strain in person to fully appreciate its beauty!

Regarding its aroma, Do-Si-Dos is a relatively pungent, but sweet, with hints of earthy tones and slight floral flavours. These classic OG fragrances combine charmingly with medical-grade body effects, leaning toward the sedative side. A stoney, head-buzz kicks in soon after consumption after which the feeling flows down over the body, offering a relaxing experience that emanates outward.

Apple Fritter

Now, this is an exceptional hybrid strain, boasting an excellent flavour with a reputation for being particularly potent, Apple Fritter scored highly in both aspects during the 2016 Cannabis Cup leaving the judges very impressed, to say the least! 

THC percentages in this strain easily exceed 20%, and the delightful flavour profile makes this a strain for any true cannabis connoisseur.

Slurricane

Another hybrid strain that hit the cannabis marketplace relatively hard is called Slurricane, this remarkable strain was created by crossing Do-Si-Dos and Purple Punch (I know, right!!?). 

Slurricane is regarded for its alluring berry aroma that was inherited from the Purple Punch genetics, pairing nicely with lighter tones of an earthy flavour from the Do-Si-Dos side. This strain gained repute thanks to its generous THC level and fruity flavour, offering expert and novice growers alike an opportunity to produce a decent crop with a fair yield.

Wedding Cake

Another top-of-the-charts cannabis strain that has to be added to this list is the famed Wedding Cake (sometimes referred to as Birthday Cake). This marvellous indica-dominant hybrid was developed by crossing two successful ‘Cookies’ strains: the original Cookies and Cherry Pie. 

Sweet and creamy undertones from the Cherry Pie strain pair amazingly well with the earthy floral aroma from the original Cookies parent, creating a treat that is hard to beat! Oh, and did I mention that Wedding Cake took home first place for ‘best indica flower’ in the High Times Cannabis Cup held in Amsterdam?!

Crystal White

Last on our list is an impressive 80% indica-dominant cannabis strain called Crystal White – Yeah, I know, This already sounds great, doesn’t it?

This super-strain was born after the crossing of two very popular strains, Super Skunk and White Widow, ultimately creating an extremely potent and stable cannabis plant that boasts loads of CBD and THC production. With a sweet, lightly-fruity taste, Crystal White is smooth to smoke and leaves a long-lasting body-stone effect, making it ideal for medical use. The yields are nothing to sneeze at either 🙂
